COMPACT FLUORESCENT
The energy crunch in both the United States, Latin America, and other growing world regions has placed a high demand on energy savings products of all types. Compact fluorescent lamps have become extremely popular as lighting consumes a high percentage of the energy used in residential, industrial and commercial areas.
Compact fluorescent lamps are especially vulnerable to poor quality standards as numerous companies scrambled to put together offerings in this industry sector to take advantage of a booming demand. Many companies with little or no experience of the technology required to manufacture these lamp types, nonetheless jumped into the field to try to make a quick buck.
Electronic ballast technology is the most important component of a high quality screw-base compact fluorescent lamp. The glass tubing and the phosphor coating used in conjunction with this tubing are also vital factors.
At Di*Star, we use the finest raw materials available in the Orient for our compact fluorescent lamps. Our spiral series achieves a 60 lumen per watt light output, while offering a 10,000 hour average rated life. Despite claims to the contrary, most comparable lamps in the industry offer a much lower light output and a shorter life span.
LINEAR FLUORESCENT LAMPS
Straight fluorescent tubes are extremely popular lamps. They are efficient, and also offer a fairly decent quality of light available in different color variations (cool white, daylight, warm white). Although shipping costs have kept the inflow of standard four foot and eight foot sizes at a bare minimum, smaller size fluorescent lamps are available in the imported variety. Because of theses shipping concerns, Di*Star carries linear fluorescent tubes in a restricted amount of sizes. Di*Star has the miniature bi-pin T5 size lamps, and standard preheat T8 lamps available up to 15 Watt (18”). We are also bringing in the new “electronic” style T5 lamps in 14, 21, 28, and 35 Watt.
Standard T5 and T8 lamps utilize regular phosphors, as these lamps are used in standard under counter and small area type applications. However, our Di*Star “electronic” T5 lamps use the newest high color rendering tri-phosphor lamp powder. These lamps are used in applications where color rendering is more consequential.
HALOGEN
The halogen lighting sector includes low voltage lamps (MR11, MR16, Bi-Pins), line voltage products (Double-ended, Single-ended, Reflector), and many more specialty types. The most popular lamps being imported currently are the mirrored reflector and bi-pin styles because of the enormous amount of sockets in the U.S. that are currently using these lamp types, and the fact that these lamps are small and relatively easy to ship in small quantities.
Because halogen lamps run at very high temperatures, the quality of the filament, the quartz glass, and the gas fill used are all extremely important factors in how good the finished product will be. Halogen lamps incorporating a reflector have additional components including ceramic cement in the base, a glass base reflector, and dichroic coating which is layered on the reflector.
Many imported lamp types fail miserably because of poor ceramic quality which begins to crack as operating temperatures rise. Also, imported reflector lamps that do not have enough layers of properly applied dichroic coating fall prey to peeling or chipping of the reflective material, which destroys the lamps lumen and color rendering characteristics.
HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE
This lighting sector includes Mercury, Metal Halide, and Sodium lamp types. All three of these lamp types are extremely popular in area lighting applications. You will find many of these lamp types in parking lots, warehouses, and other large areas where lumenous efficiency is extremely important.
With it’s bright white light, and high color rendering characteristics, Metal Halide is quickly becoming the most popular lamp type in this sector. The arc tube is by far the most critical component in determining the quality of the finished product. There are arc tubes available, which are made in the Orient, and the quality is dreadfully poor. Di*Star Metal Halide lamps are manufactured with a high quality domestically made arc tube which rivals the quality of HID lamps made by GE, Osram, and Philips.
High Pressure Sodium lamps are also very popular. Their color rendering characteristics are very poor, but their extremely high lumenous efficiency makes them a good choice for large areas that do not require high color rendering, such as parking lots and street lighting. Di*Star high pressure sodium lamps also incorporate a very high quality arc tube, to create a high lumenous efficiency, and consistent quality from one lamp to the next.
Mercury lamps are the most inexpensive to make, and pricing pressures have rendered this the area where the shoddiest lamp quality is found. Our Di*Star mercury lamp series is made with the same quality components as the rest of our HID series, offering customers a consistently solid product at a very affordable price.
INCANDESCENT LAMPS
Di*Star’s newest line of lamps are standard incandescent types including A-type, decorative, reflector lamps, tubular exit type, and more. Consistent lamp quality is just as important in this category as it is in any of the other mentioned previously.
The components used in incandescent lighting are more common than in other areas, as this is the most basic type of lamp available in the market today. Materials used for the bases (aluminum), and the filament, are of paramount importance in producing incandescent lamps with a consistent quality.
Because many of these lamp types are sold in retail outlets, attractive packaging is as important to many customers as is the quality of the lamp itself. Our Di*Star packaging is both attractive and sophisticated. The gray color is a subtle contrast to the sometimes radically bright boxes used by other manufacturers. Our boxes are marked with part numbers and product information to ease the ordering process.
SPECIALTY LAMPS
Di*Star also has a line of lamps for special applications. The need for these lamp types came from customer interest in specialized areas of lighting that most imported lamp manufacturers know nothing about.
Included in this product category are blacklights for special effects applications, and other UV specific applications. Di*Star also makes a complete line of germicidal lamps in the 253.7nm range for UV sterilization. We also manufacture a special “ozone” producing lamp which is used in some industry specific sterilization equipment.
Di*Star also specializes in lamps for Audio-Visual and Entertainment equipment. Mirrored reflector lamps for the Audio-Visual industry are made with the very highest quality imported filaments available. Between 16 and 20 layers of dichroic coating are used on these lamp types, rivaling the standards used for Audio-Visual lamps produced by the major lamp manufacturers.
